Hiking in BC

Take advantage of British Columbia's wildlife viewing while hiking on rocky shorelines or through woodland trails- hiking is one of the best way to see nature!

Gorgeous viewpoints overlooking Pender Harbour can be found via 2 trails. Mount Daniel (1,375 feet/419 m) sits above Garden Bay and will take approximately 90 minutes to reach the top, (5 miles/8 km return). Be sure to bring appropriate footwear and dress for the season. The Pender Hill Trail (758 feet/231 m) rises sharply from the saltchuk (a Native term for water) above Irvine's Landing and will take approximately 30 minutes ( 2 miles/3 km return).

Other popular Hiking Trails near the Pender Harbour area include the Sunshine Coast Trail which stretches 180 km from the Saltery Bay ferry terminal in the south to Sarah Point in the world-famous Desolation Sound Marine Park in the north. There are many access points around Powell River to the trail, with a choice of levels and duration as well as types of terrain, offering appeal to all ages and athletic ability. Other Popular Hiking Trails in the Pender Harbour Area:

  • Powell River's Inland Lake Hike - beautiful scenery and easy walking trail which stretches in full length to 13kms- but with many spots to stop along the way and take in the sights. The area is excellent for swimming, boating and fishing, with six fishing piers along the trail.

  • The Valentine Mountain Hike - recommended to tourists visiting the area because of the stunning panoramic view of the Strait of Georgia and the Upper Sunshine Coast region. The hike requires approximately 90 railed steps (.6 km, .4 mi.) to reach the top of Valentine Mountain.

  • The Willingdon Beach Interpretative Nature Trail - For those who don't want to venture too far into the wilderness. A comfortable hike close to downtown Powell River.

  • Crater Lakes Trail - For the more adventurous! (Four wheel drive vehicles required) A 25 minute hike takes you to Little Crater Lake and then proceed through the trail to Big Crater Lake.

  • The Knuckleheads Winter Recreation Area - offers excellent snowshoeing in winter.
